"Lord send me anywhere, only go with me. Lay any burden upon me, only sustain me. And sever any tie that binds, except the tie that binds my heart to You and your service." David Livingstone

The following was taken from yesterday's devotional in Our Higher Calling by Ellen White:

If we are constantly thinking of and struggling for the things that pertain to this life, we cannot keep our thoughts fixed on the things of heaven. Satan is seeking to lead our minds away from God, and to center them on the fashions, the customs, and the demands of the world, which bring disease and death....

In this world we are to obtain a fitness for the higher world. God has left a trust with us, and He expects us to use all our faculties in helping and blessing our fellow men.

Every association of life calls for the exercise of self-control, forbearance and sympathy. We differ so widely in disposition, habits, education, that our ways of looking at things vary. We judge differently. Our understanding of truth, our ideas in regard to the conduct of life, are not in all respects the same.
There are no two whose experience is alike in every particular.
The trials of one are not the trials of another. The duties that one finds light are to another most difficult and perplexing.
So frail, so ignorant, so liable to misconception is human nature, that each should be careful in the estimate he places upon another.
We little know the bearing of our acts upon the experience of others. What we do or say may seem to us of little moment, when, could our eyes be opened, we should see that upon it depended the most important results for good or for evil. Help in Daily Living, Chapter 2, EGW

A simple thought to reflect on (inspired by this month's Precious Seed newsletter):
Judas Iscariot sold out Jesus for 30 pieces of silver. "Then Judas Iscariot, one of the twelve disciples, went to the leading priests and asked, “How much will you pay me to betray Jesus to you?” And they gave him thirty pieces of silver. From that time on, Judas began looking for an opportunity to betray Jesus." Matthew 26:14
30 pieces of silver... 30 pieces of silver... where else is that amount in the Bible? Exodus 21:32 says, "...if the ox gores a slave, either male or female, the animal’s owner must pay the slave’s owner thirty silver coins, and the ox must be stoned. Jesus, in the eyes of one of his disciples and the eyes of the church leaders, was worth no more than a common slave. I read that this morning and it stuck with me. It made me think of one of my favorite scriptures in Philippians 2:6-8: Though He was God, He did not think of equality with God as something to cling to. Instead, He gave up His divine privileges; He took the humble position of a slave and was born as a human being. When He appeared in human form, He humbled Himself in obedience to God and died a criminal's death on a cross.

My take home message... so far... from this is that our sense of self-worth, our history, our purpose, our hopes, our self-esteem should come from/be in  Christ. We, in our on efforts, are sinful and mortal (Romans 3:23) and bound as slaves to sin BUT! in Christ, we are worth so much... 1 Peter 1: 18-25 says, "For you know that God paid a ransom to save you from the empty life you inherited from your ancestors. And the ransom He paid was not mere gold or silver. It was the precious blood of Christ, the sinless, spotless Lamb of God. God chose Him as your ransom long before the world began, but He has now revealed Him to you in these last days.

February 22nd -- Enchanted Ground

"When saints do sleepy grow, let them come hither,
And hear how these two pilgrims talk together;
Yea, let them learn of them, in any wise,
Thus to keep ope their drowsy, slumbering eyes.
Saint's fellowship, if it be managed well,
Keeps them awake; and that in spite of hell."

The above caption is from John Bunyan's classic The Pilgrim's Progress and refers to the section of the book where the allegorical Hopeful and Christian have nearly reached the Celestial City yet first have to cross the Enchanted Ground (read here). They fled the Cities of Destruction and Vanity Fair, endured the Valley of Humiliation and conquered Giant Despair and are now sooooo close to the Land of Beulah and the River of Death, just on the other side of which lies the Celestial City.

Christian reminds the dull and drowsy Hopeful that they were warned by the shepherd not to fall asleep on Enchanted Ground, the last leg of their journey, but instead to remain sober and alert (1 Thess 5:6) and Hopeful, thankful for the reminder, recalls the scripture that says that "two are better than one" (Ecc 4:9).

To stay wake as they traversed the Enchanted Ground, they encouraged one another and told their testimonies-- how they came into the faith and they quoted scripture and promises and spoke of Jesus' love and mercy, God's fairness and the return of Christ.

I think this "chapter" is brilliant and timely-- we, as Christians, are currently slogging our way through Enchanted Ground and many, many people are sleeping on all kinds of events and opportunities to strengthen our faith and to reach out to others about Jesus' soon return. So many will be lost on this final leg of our journey -- not because of religious persecution, not because of despair, not because of ignorance or difficulties but because we are being lulled to sleep (right on the King's Highway) by complacency and an unwillingness to let go of cherished sins that you know God is convicting you about and that the Holy Spirit wants to help you overcome. How's that for a run-on sentence? How sad is that? How subtle is the devil? How vigilant must we be-- especially now?
"Therefore let us not sleep, as do others; but let us watch and be sober." 1 Thessalonians 5:6

Lastly, thinking back to last Friday's "present truth" message... I wanted to share this quote based on the parable in Luke 12:42-44...

And the Lord said, Who then is that faithful and wise steward, whom his lord shall make ruler over his household, to give them their portion of meat in due season?
Blessed is that servant, whom his lord when he cometh shall find so doing.
Of a truth I say unto you, that he will make him ruler over all that he hath.

"If those who know the truth, the present truth for this time, would individually realize that a responsibility rests upon them to communicate to those who know not the truth, the light the Lord has graciously given them, they would more nearly meet the mind of Christ.
They would be His light, penetrating the darkness of error which covers the religious world, and which is as dense as the darkness that enveloped the Jewish nation in the days of Christ.
Shall Seventh-day Adventists walk in the same path as did the Jewish nation? Shall the message to the Laodicean church be applicable to this people? Shall these who have seen great light, who have had large opportunities and many privileges, cease to do service as witnesses for Christ?
Those who know the truth, but who feel no special burden to reveal corresponding works, will be like that servant who knew his master's will, but did it not."
